There are a number of reasons the line might be breaking more often than expected. The line we use has about 150lb test break strength, and is the only line that should be used with your SwiftPaws lure course equipment. It should hold up sufficiently, but will need to be replaced occasionally. Below are some reasons the line may wear out more quickly than normal.
- The line may be breaking/unraveling where the pup has previously bitten the line - in this case just tie it back together, as this cannot be helped. There is no limit to the number of knots there can be in the line.😊
- The line could be rubbing on rough surfaces or high points (see:Â Setup on a hill or uneven ground)
- If you are leaving the line and field pulleys set up instead of bringing them in after playing - the weather and small critters/bugs will nibble on the line and cause it to deteriorate rapidly
- If the line tension is too tight (see:Â How to Adjust Line Tension)
- If there is a buildup of melted line on the main drive pulley (see:Â The Pink Band)
- If the field pulleys are not spinning freely
- If you are not using the tethers when you stake the drive and pulleys the line tension is difficult to maintain. Be sure to always tether them to maintain proper - light - tension
- The knots might being slipping or coming undone
- The weather (and small creatures) might be deteriorating the line, if you are leaving the line outside when not in use.
- The line may be slipping on the drive wheel and melting/breaking (adjust for correct tension and be sure to use the tethers!)
NOTE: We now offer the prototype auto line winder for sale on our website for Home Original and Home Plus. It makes set up and break down a breeze! Chase! Has a wind-up mode you can use to wind the line right onto the pulley. In either case, always use the wind mode for winding the line.
Chase! wind-up mode may not work if there is no line attached.
